Dear MP,
My name is Aqeeb Mahazudin and I am a grade 11 student attending Louise Arbor Secondary School. This message is an attempt to attain your help in the conservation of the Black Rhinos of the Earth.
Did you know that the estimated population of black rhino in the early 20th century was estimated to be about 850 000 and now there is only 4880 as of February 2013? The black rhino is a critically endangered species and it is very important that we keep them alive and make them less endangered. The black rhino’s horn is known mainly for their horns which provide a source of income for some and is also used as a traditional medicine to treat common illness. Black rhino populations are constantly being threatened by poachers and even though this has significantly gone down in the years, it still exists and continues to be a problem. Also regular hunting and habitat loss has also led to black rhino population decreases.
As of right now the WWF has developed some ways to help preserve and increase the population of the black rhinos. The WWF is currently: “expanding existing protected areas and improving their management: establishing new protected areas, improving security monitoring to protect rhinos from poaching, improving local and international law enforcement to stop the flow of rhino horn and other illegal wildlife trade items from Africa to other regions of the world, and they are promoting well managed wildlife-based tourism experiences that will also provide additional funding for conservation efforts.” As you can see, a lot of effort has been put into the preservation of this animal and it is important that we try to bring its population back up and maintain it.
Preservation efforts and rescues cost money. There is where you can help. The government of Canada can donate money to the WWF to help support the efforts to preserve this animal from extinction. Also the money can be used for anti-poaching equipment for rangers in Africa so that the population that has not yet been recovered can be maintained, preserved and protected.
