Personal Response
I believe that biodiversity is a very important part of our everyday lives and it is important that we put forth our best efforts to preserve it for ourselves and the future generations. According to the Convention on Biological Diversity, “At least 40 per cent of the world’s economy and 80 per cent of the needs of the poor are derived from biological resources. In addition, the richer the diversity of life, the greater the opportunity for medical discoveries, economic development, and adaptive responses”. This shows that the entire world is dependent on the biodiversity that we have today. Biodiversity is important for every single species to survive on this Earth. In every ecosystem that we encounter, there are a numerous amount of organisms, from microscopic to our size that contribute to each other’s survival. If a large amount or a certain organism were to cease to exist, then the ecosystem would stop function properly and that would result in the overall death of the rest of the organisms. This is the same for us. Our whole world is like one whole huge ecosystem, we are all dependent on each other and what everyone has to offer. Biodiversity offers so much to us humans. Some of the ecosystem services that we use are: the protection of water resources, soil formation and protection, nutrient storage and recycling and also pollution breakdown and absorption. Some of the biological resources that we use everyday are: food, medicinal resources, and wood products. Some of the social benefits of all these are: research, education and recreation and tourism. Without all of these resources and services that the biodiversity here on earth offers to us then we would probably become extinct very soon. The importance of biodiversity may sometimes be overlooked, however it is important that we maintain our biodiversity and manage it in a sustainable way. The earth and its inhabitants are like a car, the biodiversity is the engine and the rest of us are the parts. Without the engine, the car can not work. Therefore, biodiversity is very important and it is crucial that we preserve it so that we can ensure the survival of all the inhabitants on the Earth now and to come.
